The National Sports Commission (NSC) continued its nationwide appreciation tour on Thursday, with Director General Bukola Olopade visiting Abeokuta to present outstanding junior athlete Majekodunmi Afusat Bisola with a ₦3 million cheque.
This initiative recognizes exceptional junior athletes who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s sports achievements in 2025.
Majekodunmi showcased remarkable talent at the 2024 National Sports Festival, securing gold in both the 400 meters and the 4x400m relay.
She replicated this success at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Junior Championship and shone at the African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola.
During the presentation, Olopade emphasized the NSC’s commitment to rewarding grassroots athletes, stating, “We agreed there was a need to appreciate these young talents who made Nigeria proud last year.”
He highlighted that over 200 of the 376 medals won by Nigerian athletes in 2025 came from grassroots talents, underscoring the importance of investing in youth development.
The NSC’s approach of presenting awards at athletes’ schools and training grounds aims to promote transparency and combat age cheating.
Majekodunmi expressed her gratitude, stating that the reward would motivate her further as she aims for success at the upcoming Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
The appreciation tour began in Lagos and will continue to Delta State, Akwa Ibom State, and Abuja.
