The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested a 45-year-old suspected drug smuggler, Ashiru Bala, and seized 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup in Kano State.

The arrest was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s public relations officer, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.

According to the statement, Bala was apprehended at his residence in Lambu village, Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, following an intelligence-led operation.

“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano State Strategic Command has arrested one Ashiru Bala following intelligence-led operations that led to the seizure of 1,499 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine,” the statement read.

“Operatives arrested Bala at his residence in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area on 25 February 2026. The suspect was intercepted after transporting the consignment from Abuja.”

The Command revealed that the illicit drugs were allegedly meant for delivery to a local dealer in Kano for unlawful distribution and consumption. The consignment was reportedly stockpiled ahead of the Sallah celebrations, a period often associated with increased demand.

Maigatari said the suspect confessed to transporting prohibited substances for about two years. He also disclosed that Bala had worked in township services in Abuja for four years.

According to the statement, the suspect admitted receiving substantial payments for conveying the consignments, indicating awareness of the illegal nature of the activity.

The Kano Strategic Command Commander, DY Lawal, described the arrest as part of sustained efforts to rid communities of illicit drugs.

“This arrest is a demonstration of our commitment to protecting communities from the harms of illicit substances.

“Intelligence-driven
enforcement, especially during periods of increased demand such as festive seasons, remains central to the Command’s strategy,” he said.

He added that the command would continue to intensify pressure on drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice.

The operation forms part of the ongoing “Operation Ramadan Mubarak,” initiated by Lawal in line with the renewed national agenda of a drug-free society championed by NDLEA chairman and chief executive officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd).
