In a move aimed at driving grassroots economic transformation, the Tinubu Northern Women Support Group (TNWSG) has unveiled a strategic empowerment programme that will see 100,000 petty traders across the nineteen Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) receive financial grants to boost their businesses.

The group, which rose from its emergency meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja, announced that each beneficiary would receive a direct financial intervention across the North Central, North East, and North West geopolitical zones.

In a press statement signed by its national coordinator, Hon Aisha Aliyu Obalim, the group described the initiative as a deliberate effort to translate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” into tangible impact at the grassroots level.

“Our quest is to join forces with the government of Nigeria to translate the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ into tangible grassroots impact, among the women living and engaged in petty trade in the three geopolitical zones of the North,” she said.

Obalim emphasised that while the group remains committed to supporting the reelection campaign of President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, the empowerment programme is fundamentally about economic sustainability.

“This is not going to be mere handouts for consumption; it is going to provide capital for trade. It is intended to be a substantial boost to women petty traders in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),” she stated.

The group disclosed that beneficiaries would be organized into clusters of 50 women each, supervised by designated Cluster Leads to ensure accountability and track the impact of the funds on their livelihoods.

“Make no mistake. It is not a loan but a grant. A practical enabler for us to grow together. Hence the need for a supervisor who will help us all grow,” Obalim said.

According to the statement, the selection criteria will focus on identified gaps and the viability of existing enterprises, with the goal of enabling women to scale their petty trading into significant commercial ventures.

“This gesture is for all Northern women. Our selection criteria will focus on the gap identified and the viability of enterprise. Support to 100,000 petty traders can be huge, and we believe it will be a leap for our regional economy,” Obalim noted.

While acknowledging the political undertones of the initiative coming ahead of the 2027 elections, the national coordinator insisted that the programme transcends partisan lines and is designed to foster economic independence for women across the region.

“Empowering the women in the Northern region is an investment in the economic backbone of the region. The selected 100,000 beneficiaries will receive financial grants to boost their petty trade significantly.

“This funding is specifically structured to serve as a boost to their working capital to grow inventory, expand market reach, and boost overall livelihood,” she stated.

The TNWSG reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the progress of the initiative to ensure it yields lasting economic transformation for families and communities across Northern Nigeria.
