Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar has reminded Muslims that Islam forbids politicians from not being upright in their affairs and people selling their votes.
The former military leader who spoke in an interview after a session during the annual interpretation of the holy Qur’an at his resident mosque yesterday maintained that Nigerians must encourage uprightness in the conduct of the country’s affairs.
He said, “We should avoid politics of bitterness, we should be our brothers’ keepers and for the electorate, don’t sell your votes, it is very important, it is haram (forbidden) in Islam to sell your votes.”
Abdulsalami said the affairs of politicians should be guided by the good of the nation and the people.
He added, “We are now in a difficult situation, the economy is biting, but Alhamdulilah, so far so good, those who are endowed should be able to help the less privileged, because in Islam, it is not acceptable that you have and your neighbour goes hungry.”
He also called for unity and commitment to the ideals of the holy Quran and Hadith as taught in the holy month of Ramadan.
Abdulsalami annually hosts the translation and explanation of verses from the holy Quran which provides in-depth understanding of important aspects of Islam.
This year’s annual Tapsir (explanation of the Qur’an) was presided over by an Islamic scholar, Sheik Yahaya Abubakar, who provided explanations to various verses of the Qur’an for deeper understanding of Islam.
