The Yobe State Government, through the Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons and Host Communities (SOLID) Project, has intensified collaboration with key stakeholders to improve water service delivery across displacement-affected communities in the state.

The initiative followed a high-level stakeholder engagement meeting convened to disseminate findings from a Water Infrastructure Assessment conducted in Damaturu and Gujba local government areas.

The engagement brought together critical stakeholders including the Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Usman Ahmed, the General Manager of the Yobe State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Alhaji Abubakar Liman Baba, the General Manager of Yobe State Water Corporation, Alhaji Ba’abba Habu, local government officials, development partners, civil society organisations and traditional institutions.

Speaking at the engagement, the State Project Coordinator of SOLID, Alhaji Suleiman Dauda, emphasized that reliable access to water remains critical to public health, dignity and community resilience, particularly for displaced populations and their host communities.

Dauda said the assessment provides an important evidence base that will guide future investments and strengthen coordination among stakeholders in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Usman Ahmed, described the initiative as timely and critical in addressing existing water infrastructure challenges and commended the SOLID Project team for supporting the state government’s efforts to improve access to water in affected communities.

Similarly, the General Manager RUWASA, Alhaji Abubakar Liman Baba noted that the assessment findings would not only chart a way forward for improving water infrastructure but would also serve as a tool to advocate increased funding for the sector, particularly in the areas of sanitation and hygiene.

The meeting reviewed the status of water infrastructure in the affected communities and identified priority actions required to strengthen service delivery for internally displaced persons and host communities.

Findings from the assessment highlighted the need for strategic investments to strengthen existing water infrastructure and expand access to reliable water supply in communities across Damaturu and Gujba local government areas.

The exercise also presents an opportunity for the Yobe State Government and its partners to rehabilitate critical water facilities and scale up sustainable water solutions that benefit both host communities and internally displaced persons.
