Britain’s Sonay Kartal saved a match point and also needed a medical time out as she battled to a 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7-2) victory in her second-round match against Emma Navarro at Indian Wells.
Kartal comfortably took the opening set but lost the second, having taken a medical timeout after “a bit of a twitch” in her back.
In a tight third, American Navarro – a former top 10 player – twice served for victory before 24-year-old Kartal came through in the tie-break.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Kartal said she was “super proud” to have fought her way through to round three, where she will play American Madison Keys.
“[I had] little niggles here and there,” she said. “I think I just landed a bit funny on serve and had a bit of a twitch in my back.
