The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State will commission a new state secretariat in Yenagoa on Saturday, March 14, as part of its efforts to reposition the party ahead of its forthcoming elective congress.

The move followed the dissolution of the Solomon Agwana-led State Working Committee in April 2025 and the subsequent abandonment of the party’s former secretariat, located along the Isaac Boro Expressway in the state capital.

The acting chairman of the party’s caretaker committee in the state, Hon. George Turnah, is expected to perform the commissioning of the new secretariat.

Party leaders, newly- elected ward and local government executives, as well as women and youth groups are expected to attend the event.

In a statement issued on Friday, the acting state secretary of the party, Alfreder Ebibofayei Ato, said the commissioning would take place ahead of the Bayelsa State Elective Congress.

She also disclosed that the inauguration and swearing-in of all elected ward, local government and state executive committee members would follow immediately after the commissioning of the secretariat.

Ato called on members of the party and Bayelsans to turn out in large numbers for the event, adding that the gathering would mark what she described as a new phase for the party in the state.

However, a source within the caretaker committee indicated that some national leaders of the party may not attend the event.

According to the source, the national leader of the party, Nyesom Wike; the national chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed; the national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu; and the national vice chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih, are currently occupied with preparations for the party’s National Convention scheduled to hold in Abuja on March 29 and 30.

The PDP recently concluded its ward and local government congresses in the state.

The ward congresses were held on March 3 across the 105 wards in Bayelsa State, while the local government congresses took place on March 7 across the eight local government areas, producing eight local government chairmen of the party.

During the Ogbia local government congress in Ogbia town, Hon. Turnah described the successful conduct of the congress as proof that the PDP remains strong in the state.

He said the development had put to rest fears in some quarters that the party was weakening in Bayelsa.

Turnah also expressed confidence that the PDP would present credible candidates in the 2027 general elections and reclaim political leadership in the state.
