Iran said Tuesday it successfully tested a new air defense system modeled after the U.S. Hawk system during a drill in the country's east. A senior Iranian official called the six-day air defense drill over almost the entire eastern half of the country a "slap" to America and Israel. The exercise has been said to include Iranian jet fighters, drones and more than 8,000 troops. (AP Photo/Mehr News Agency, Majid Asgaripour)

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) , a UN nuclear watchdog, on Wednesday confirmed that Iranian authorities reported a projectile impact at the premises of the country’s only operational nuclear power facility, but said the incident caused no damage or injuries.

According to a report by AFP, the Vienna-based agency said it had been informed that “a projectile hit the premises of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant on Tuesday evening,” adding that there was “no damage to the plant or injuries to staff.”

IAEA director-general Rafael Grossi, reiterated “his call for restraint during the conflict to avoid any risk of a nuclear accident,” the statement said.

The Bushehr facility, located in southwestern Iran, remains the Islamic Republic’s only operational nuclear power reactor. It was first connected to the national grid in 2011, marking a significant milestone in Iran’s civilian nuclear energy programme.

The latest development comes against the backdrop of prolonged geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear activities. Tehran has been under stringent United States sanctions since 2018, when Washington unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action—a landmark agreement that had provided sanctions relief in exchange for limits on Iran’s nuclear programme.
