Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have staged protests in the United Kingdom, demanding the immediate release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, during the ongoing state visit of President Bola Tinubu.
The demonstrators converged on major locations in London, including Parliament Square, 10 Downing Street, the Commonwealth Office, and the Nigerian High Commission, where they displayed placards bearing inscriptions such as “Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
In a video circulating online, one of the protesters declared, “Our message is very clear: Tinubu does not deserve a royal salute.
That is our stand today, being the 18th of March.”
Many of the protesters were dressed in red caps and waved Biafran flags — a horizontal tricolour of red, black, and green, with a golden rising sun at the centre of the black stripe — as they chanted slogans in support of Kanu’s release.
The protest comes amid heightened attention on Nigeria’s political climate during President Tinubu’s visit to the UK, with IPOB supporters using the opportunity to amplify their longstanding demand for the release of their detained leader.
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, has been in the custody of Nigerian authorities over charges related to secessionist activities, a development that continues to draw reactions from supporters both within and outside Nigeria.
