The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the full restoration of train services along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor following a disruption earlier this week.

Managing director Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this in a post on X on Wednesday, assuring passengers of enhanced safety and improved operational standards after the March 16 incident.

“Following the incident on Monday, 16th March 2026, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” Opeifa said.

“Passengers can now confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys.

“We are also pleased to welcome passengers on the AKTS return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, yesterday, 17th March 2026, with the support of HRH (Alhaji) Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko, Hakimin Idu District Head, Abuja. Train services are back to normal — safer and better.”

The NRC boss emphasised that the corporation’s rapid response helped minimise disruption, while reaffirming its commitment to passenger safety and reliable service delivery.

The agency also confirmed the successful resumption of the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) return trip from Rigasa, signalling a return to normal operations for commuters along the busy route.

The disruption was traced to an incident that occurred at about 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station on the Abuja–Kaduna rail line, involving train KA2. The train had departed Rigasa and made a scheduled stop at Jere before continuing its journey.

According to the NRC, after leaving Jere, where an additional rear locomotive was attached, the locomotive became detached while in motion, rolled forward, and collided with the rear of the train, resulting in a serious operational incident.

The train was conveying 429 passengers, alongside crew members and security personnel. No fatalities were recorded, although some passengers sustained injuries and received immediate medical attention before the train proceeded to Idu Station in Abuja.
