The Governing Council of the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing and gazetting the university’s Establishment Bill into law.
The council described the development as a major milestone for Nigeria’s maritime sector and the growth of the country’s blue economy.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the council, Abdullahi Nedanda Bardi, said the president’s action demonstrates his administration’s commitment to strengthening maritime education and advancing the “Renewed Hope” agenda.
Bardi noted that while the signing of the bill had earlier generated nationwide excitement, the official gazetting of the Act now provides full legal backing for the institution to operate as a recognised federal university.
“This demonstrates the President’s unwavering commitment to the development of our university,” he said.
According to him, the law provides the necessary legal framework for the university to expand its academic programmes and contribute to the training of skilled professionals for Nigeria’s maritime industry.
The council chairman said the development would further position the institution to compete globally in maritime education and research.
He also acknowledged the contributions of stakeholders who supported the process leading to the passage and gazetting of the Act.
Bardi expressed appreciation to Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo and Matthew Tonlagha, among others, for their advocacy and support toward the establishment and growth of the university.
He urged stakeholders to sustain their support for the institution to enable it achieve its mandate as a centre for maritime training, research and innovation.
