Kano State government has suspended some major durbar activities ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations over security concerns.
It, however, said that the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, will lead the Durbar procession on approved designated routes.
The commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the government yesterday, citing credible intelligence indicating plans by some individuals to cause unrest during the Sallah festivities.
Waiya said the decision was taken by the government following deliberations by the State Security Council and consultations with the Kano Emirate Council and other stakeholders.
He stressed that while the government remains committed to preserving Kano’s cultural heritage, it would not compromise its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.
According to him, Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau and Hawan Dorayi have been suspended, while Hawan Nasarawa will hold in a modified form without horseback processions.
He added that the Hawan Idi Durbar will be conducted along designated routes, beginning from Kofar Mata Eid praying ground through approved areas to Gidan Shettima, and terminating at Kofar Fatalwa within the Emir’s Palace.
The statement noted that the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, will lead the procession.
Waiya further disclosed that security agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance and ensure strict compliance with the directives, warning that any attempt to breach public peace would be decisively handled.
While assuring residents of government commitment to ensuring a peaceful and hitch-free Eid-el-Fitr celebration, the commissioner urged them to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security agencies and refrain from spreading unverified information.
