Wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Foluke Adeboye, has spoken about how she discarded her gold jewellery after giving her life to Christ.
Adeboye made the disclosure in an interview with Gold Maker TV, where she recounted the drastic lifestyle changes she embraced in the early days of the church.
“Every woman loves fashion. For example, I had already made a set of gold and all kinds of things for my child who was under two years before we became born again. By the moment we were born again, then in RCCG, it was a taboo for you to have earrings,” she said.
She explained that her newfound faith came with strict expectations at the time, including abstaining from wearing earrings and gold, which led her to make the difficult decision to dispose of her valuables.
“So everything, we drop it in the lagoon, which my mother’s friend came and asked me, you should have given all this to your mother so that she can go and sell it, this and that. I said, whatever is not good for me, it’s not good for my mother,” she added.
According to her, the decision sparked concern from those around her, particularly her mother’s friend, who questioned why the jewellery was not given out or sold instead of being thrown away.
Adeboye admitted that the sacrifice was not easy, considering the financial value of the items, but stressed that she was committed to fully aligning with the teachings of her new faith.
“In the days of Copper, you know what, I don’t know whether you know, what is Copper. When we were wearing Copper instead of gold, only God knows how much I spent on Copper,” she said.
Despite the cost and emotional weight of the decision, she maintained that she has no regrets, emphasising that her devotion to God took priority over material possessions.
