A fire outbreak has destroyed parts of the building housing the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) office in Bauchi, damaging sections of the roof and critical electrical installations.
LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that the fire reportedly originated from a neighbouring house sharing a fence with the commission’s premises during routine sanitation.
A staff member of the commission, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the fire spread to the office roof before it was noticed by personnel on duty.
“All staff present at the time were safely evacuated, and there was no casualty,” the source said.
He added that youths working at a nearby road construction site were the first to respond, using buckets of water to contain the flames before firefighters arrived.
The timely intervention, he noted, prevented the fire from spreading to other sections of the building.
Although no official documents were destroyed, the source confirmed that the office’s electrical wiring was severely affected.
