Rwanda In Flying Start At Patricia Kambarami Cup, Ghana Humbled

Rwanda began their campaign in the 5th NCF Women’s Invitational tournament, the Patricia Kambarami Cup, with a dominant performance, posting a formidable 210 runs against Ghana. The tournament is held in memory of Patricia Kambarami, the former ICC Africa Regional Development Manager, who was pivotal in advancing women’s cricket across the continent.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Rwanda quickly justified their decision. Opener Fanny Utagushimaninde set the tone with back-to-back boundaries off Rebecca Adotei’s first two deliveries. Rwanda reached 43 without loss after just three overs, with boundaries raining from both Utagushimaninde and Giselle Ishimwe. The partnership was broken in the fourth over when Ishimwe was dismissed by a superb catch from Kate Awuah.

Despite losing captain Diane Bimenyimana for 7, Rwanda continued to build. Clarisse Umutoniwase entered at number four and immediately found the boundary. The innings’ highlight was Fanny Utagushimaninde’s magnificent international debut century, scoring 111 runs off 65 balls, including 17 fours, and remaining unbeaten. Supported by Uwase Merveille’s brisk 32 off 19 balls, Rwanda concluded their innings on an impressive 210 runs.

In response, Ghana faced a challenging target. Despite some early resistance, including Rashidatu Salia’s brief flourish, wickets fell consistently. Belise Murekatete and Geovanis Uwase’s pace proved difficult to handle. Ghana struggled to form significant partnerships and ultimately finished their 20 overs on 88 for 8.

Fanny Utagushimaninde was deservedly named Player of the Match for her outstanding century.
