The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called on the federal government to urgently conclude ongoing renegotiations with university unions and implement measures to cushion the effects of rising inflation on workers.
In his Eid-el-Fitr message to mark the end of Ramadan fast, SSANU’s national president, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, extended greetings to members, the Muslim Ummah and Nigerians at large, commending the discipline and resilience demonstrated during the fasting period.
The SSANU leader also expressed sympathy with victims of recent bombings in Maiduguri, noting that the incident underscored the need for improved security across the country. He said the union stood in solidarity with affected families and prayed for peace and healing.
Highlighting the challenges facing university workers, Ibrahim said rising living costs driven by inflation had placed significant strain on members, many of whom continued to serve diligently despite economic hardship. He stressed that such sacrifices must not be overlooked.
He urged the government to prioritise the conclusion of negotiations with SSANU and NASU, warning that prolonged delays could erode confidence and deepen uncertainty within the university system.
He said, “The rising cost of living, driven by persistent inflation, has placed a heavy strain on workers and their families, with many doing more with far less while remaining committed to sustaining the institutions that shape our nation’s future.
“As a union, we acknowledge these sacrifices, but we must also ensure they are not taken for granted.
“We therefore call on the federal government to hasten the conclusion of the ongoing renegotiation process with SSANU/NASU, in a manner that reflects sincerity, fairness, and a clear recognition of the central role university workers play in national development.
“Policies must translate into real relief through improved welfare, wage adjustments, and economic measures that restore dignity to labour.”
