CSO Slams FCTA Over Jabi Lake Sell-off, Warns of Ecosystem Disaster

Civil society organisation, Spaces for Change (S4C), has expressed serious concerns over the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s (FCTA) allocation of development rights at Jabi Lake to private companies, highlighting potential risks to local ecosystems.

S4C executive director, Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, in a position paper, highlighted that publicly available records showed that Suburban Broadband Limited and Akida Hills Limited have secured Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) for a massive mixed-use redevelopment.

She noted that the project envisions transforming the lakeside area into a hub of residential towers, commercial spaces, and recreational facilities—potentially erasing one of Abuja’s last major public green zones.

“This is not just another construction project; it’s a threat to the future of public recreational spaces in our capital,” the Ibezim-Ohaeri declared.

She decried that Jabi Lake, long cherished by residents for picnics, boating, and respite from the city’s concrete sprawl, now faces large-scale disruption.

The organisation noted that large-scale construction near a natural water body like Jabi Lake could affect water quality, vegetation, and biodiversity.
In a city facing rapid development and rising temperatures, such spaces play a key role in climate resilience and sustainable living, S4C pointed out.

Public interest has surged, with emerging discussions and protests reflecting broader questions about transparency in urban planning.

S4C called for greater disclosure on the allocation terms, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) details, and public consultation processes to ensure decisions align with environmental standards and public interest.

“Decisions affecting shared public assets should prioritise transparency, sustainability, and accountability,” the group stated and committed to monitoring the project, engaging stakeholders, and advocating for reforms that balance development with ecological and community needs.
