The senator representing Kwara north in the National Assembly,Sadiq Umar will on Tuesday publicly declare his intention to run for the state’s governorship seat during the 2027 general elections.
As a prelude to the official declaration of his governorship ambition, Sadiq on Monday, visited the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ilorin, to acquaint the party’s leadership about his mission.
He was received by the state APC chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi and other executives of the party in the state.
Umar assured the party’s leadership of his commitment to ensure the continuity of the programmes and policies of the incumbent Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, if elected as his successor.
Meanwhile, the gubernatorial ambition of Umar, has attracted the support of stakeholders across the state.
Some stakeholders who spoke with journalists in Ilorin described Umar as an experienced politician whose background in the legislature could place him in a strong position ahead of the 2027 contest.
A political analyst , Dr. Musa Bello, said Umar’s legislative experience and involvement in development initiatives have made him one of the figures to watch in the coming election cycle.
” Umar’s. record in the Senate and his engagement with constituents have contributed to the growing interest in his possible governorship ambition,” Bello said.
A youth leader in Ilorin West local government area, Ahmed Lawal, said many young people in the state believe the senator’s experience could contribute to sustaining the development efforts currently ongoing in the state.
“Many youths are paying attention to leaders who have experience and understanding of governance. Senator Umar’s work in the National Assembly has brought him into that conversation,” he said.
A community leader in Kwara South, Mrs. Funke Adeyemi, noted that the senator’s involvement in community programmes has helped increase his visibility across the state.
“People have seen some of the projects and initiatives linked to his office, and that is why his name keeps coming up whenever discussions about the next governorship election arise,” she said.
