Rwanda has become the sixth African nation to benefit from the FIFA Arena initiative following the inauguration of a state-of-the-art mini-pitch in Kigali.
The facility, officially opened on Monday, 30 March 2026 at Kagarama Secondary School in the capital, marks a significant milestone for the East African country. Rwanda joins Algeria, Djibouti, Liberia, Morocco and Niger among the continent’s beneficiaries since the launch of the global project.
The inauguration also carries added significance as the first project delivered under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FIFA and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), a partnership aimed at advancing sustainable football infrastructure alongside broader social impact initiatives.
Under the agreement, Rwanda is set to receive 10 FIFA Arena pitches nationwide. Additional sites earmarked for development include St Joseph (Muhanga), TTC Save (Gisagara), GSOB (Huye), GS Kabare (Ngoma), ES Nyamirama and IPM Mukarange (Kayonza), College Inyemeramihigo (Rubavu), College SINA Gerard (Rulindo), and Lycée de Kigali (Nyarugenge).
The initiative is expected to deliver far-reaching benefits, offering young people across communities greater access to football while promoting inclusion, participation and personal development.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström led the inauguration ceremony, joined by Rwanda’s Minister of Sport Nelly Mukazayire, Rwanda Football Federation President Fabrice Shema Ngoga, and AFD Country Director Anthea Manassé, among other dignitaries.
Pupils from Kagarama Secondary School, alongside children from neighbouring communities who will directly benefit from the facility, were also in attendance, underlining the project’s grassroots focus.
