Viktor Gyökeres was the hero for Sweden on Tuesday night, bagging a dramatic late winner to secure a 3-2 victory over Poland in their European play-off final and send his nation to the 2026 World Cup.

The Arsenal striker bundled the ball over the line following a frantic goalmouth scramble with just two minutes remaining, sealing Sweden’s place in the finals to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. They now join the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia in Group F.

Earlier, Sweden twice took the lead through Anthony Elanga and Gustaf Lagerbielke, only for Nicola Zalewski and Karol Swiderski to pull Poland level on both occasions.

This triumph marks a return to football’s global showpiece for Graham Potter’s side after an eight-year absence, having missed out on the last edition in 2022. Sweden had qualified for the play-offs by topping Group C1 in the Nations League after a challenging qualifying campaign.

For Poland, it’s a bitter pill to swallow, as they fail to reach the World Cup finals for the first time since 2014.

The match in Stockholm began nervously for the hosts, with Poland dictating the early tempo. The breakthrough arrived spectacularly in the 20th minute when Yasi Ayari backheeled to the onrushing Elanga, who smashed a left-footed shot in off the crossbar.

Poland nearly equalised five minutes later as Swiderski’s swivelled volley forced a fine one-handed save from Kristoffer Nordfeldt. The pressure told in the 33rd minute when Nordfeldt fumbled Zalewski’s curling effort, allowing the 24-year-old to level the scores.

However, Sweden restored their lead just before the interval. Celtic’s Benjamin Nygren whipped in a teasing inswinger from a free-kick, and centre-half Lagerbielke ghosted in at the near post to nod past a stranded Kamil Grabara.

Despite Robert Lewandowski’s frustrated efforts for Poland, it was Zalewski again who set up the equaliser in the 55th minute. His miscued attempt to control a Matty Cash cross fell perfectly for Swiderski to tap home.

With extra time looming, the previously quiet Gyökeres emerged as the match-winner. After a sequence of play that saw Grabara save from Lucas Bergvall and a Besfort Zeneli shot hit the post, Gyökeres was on hand to force the ball over the line from close range, sparking jubilant scenes for the Swedes.
