The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has announced a one-month extension for the filing of individual annual income tax returns, moving the deadline from March 31 to April 30, 2026.

In a press release issued yesterday by its head of Corporate Communications, Mustapha Sumaila, said the agency cited the need to enhance compliance and give taxpayers adequate time to submit accurate documentation.

According to the statement, the acting executive chairman of the FCT-IRS, Mr Michael Ango, explained that while the statutory deadline remains March 31, the extension is a strategic measure to facilitate the process.

“The extension is intended to provide taxpayers with additional time to complete and submit accurate returns and improve overall compliance within the Federal Capital Territory,” Ango stated.

He emphasised that filing tax returns is a civic duty that should not be overlooked. “Individuals should prioritise the timely filing of their annual income tax returns, noting that voluntary compliance should be embraced as a routine civic responsibility and a vital contribution to national development,” he said.

The Service reiterated that manual submissions will not be accepted, as the agency continues to strengthen its digital infrastructure.

All annual returns must be filed electronically through the designated FCT-IRS tax portal.

“Electronic filing through the FCT-IRS Tax portal remains the approved method for submitting annual returns, as the Service continues to strengthen its digital tax administration system,” Ango noted.

He described the platform, accessible at www.taxporta.fctirs.gov.ng, as secure, efficient, and user-friendly, advising taxpayers to exercise care when onboarding to avoid processing delays.

“Taxpayers should ensure that their details, particularly their National Identification Number (NIN), phone numbers, and addresses, are correctly stated when onboarding on the portal to avoid processing delays,” he added.

For individuals requiring further assistance, the FCT-IRS boss stated that help is available at any of the Service’s offices across the territory.

The extension is effective immediately, with the new filing deadline set for April 30, 2026.
