With the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season drawing to a close, attention has largely focused on the title contenders and the battle to avoid relegation. However, a captivating contest for individual glory is unfolding, with a host of players vying for the coveted Golden Boot award. As many as six or more players are set to go head-to-head in the final six matchdays, promising a thrilling conclusion to the scoring charts.
Leading the charge in the race for the Golden Boot are Rangers International striker, Godwin Obaje, and Ikorodu City winger Joseph Arumala, both of whom have netted 11 goals this season. Hot on their heels are Victor Mbaoma (Remo Stars), El-Kanemi Warriors midfielder Daddy Abdulrahman, Katsina United’s Uche Collins, and Emeka Obioma of Abia Warriors, all with 10 goals apiece.
Performance Breakdown
Among the top six leading scorers, Obaje, Arumala, and Mbaoma demonstrate the most direct goal involvement. Obaje and Arumala each boast 11 goals and two assists. Mbaoma, despite missing a significant portion of the early season due to bruised ribs, has contributed 10 goals and an assist from just 23 appearances – the fewest among the frontrunners.
El-Kanemi Warriors midfielder Abdulrahman has made the most appearances among the top six, with a total of 12 direct goal involvements (10 goals and two assists). Interestingly, Obioma is the only player in the top six yet to register an assist this season, having made 26 appearances for Abia Warriors. Furthermore, Collins stands out as the sole top-six scorer to have netted a hat-trick this season.
The Chasing Pack
The Golden Boot race also features a strong chasing pack. Plateau United winger Temitope Vincent Adebayo leads this group with nine goals. He is joined by Sodiq Ibrahim (3SC), Enyimba striker Chidera Michael, and Igbunu Evwierhurhoma of Warri Wolves. These consistent goalscorers in recent weeks are undoubtedly breathing down the necks of the frontrunners, adding another layer of intrigue to the competition.
Further down, a group of outsiders are also in contention, each with eight goals. This includes Jonathan Mairiga of Wikki Tourists, Chidozie Iwundu (Rangers), Bendel Insurance duo Kayode Oke and Alex Oweilayefa, and 3SC’s Qamar Adegoke. Kano Pillars legend Rabiu Ali is also within striking distance with seven goals.
# A Special Mention
A notable mention goes to Chidozie Iwundu, who stands out as the top-scoring defender in the league. With eight goals from his centre-back role in 29 appearances for Rangers, his goalscoring prowess has been crucial to his club’s title aspirations. Rangers will be hoping his impressive form continues into the final six matchdays.
The race for individual glory remains wide open, promising twists and turns until the very end. Factors such as fixture difficulty, favourable run-ins, struggling defences, and sheer hunger in front of goal will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining who ultimately claims the top individual prize in this unpredictable league. At this stage, nothing is guaranteed, and all top marksmen are strong contenders to lift the Golden Boot.
