Lagos State governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has authorised the release of 43 inmates from correctional facilities across the state as part of his ongoing efforts to reduce overcrowding and reform the criminal justice system.
This decision followed a previous release in December 2025, when 91 inmates were freed, demonstrating the government’s ongoing efforts to alleviate congestion in correctional centres.
A statement by the commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), explained that the inmates were released under the prerogative of mercy, as provided in Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The beneficiaries were recommended by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, in accordance with established legal procedures.
The government highlighted that this initiative reflects its dedication to justice, fairness, and the rule of law, while also improving conditions in custodial facilities and enabling quicker trial processes through better transportation to courts.
As part of broader reforms, the state previously provided two coaster buses to the correctional service to facilitate secure and timely inmate transportation to court appearances, helping reduce delays.
The statement also mentioned ongoing renovations and upgrades to correctional centres across Lagos, aimed at strengthening infrastructure and enhancing inmate welfare.
Additionally, the state called on the Federal Government to consider transferring control of at least one correctional centre in Lagos to the state, noting that most inmates are offenders under state laws.
It asserted that such a transfer would help address issues of overcrowding, insufficient funding, and weak oversight.
Lagos State reaffirmed its commitment to justice sector reforms, pledging to continue pursuing policies that balance victims’ rights, public safety, offender rehabilitation, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
