Natives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have applauded efforts of the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, on the recognition of indigenous people as rightful owners of land in the nation’s capital.

President of the Abuja Original Inhabitants and Youths Empowerment Organisation (AOIYEO), Commandant Isaac David, said in a statement yesterday that the natives were very pleased with the minister’s recent remarks and policy direction, adding that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was setting a precedence by prioritising inclusion, justice and fairness for natives.

He described Wike’s stance that indigenous people deserve equal privileges as other residents as a powerful validation of the long-standing struggle of Abuja’s original inhabitants.

According to him, the elevation of traditional rulers and the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy to indigenous communities mark a turning point in the history of the FCT.

He said, “For decades, the original inhabitants of Abuja have watched others benefit from the land that rightfully belongs to them. Today, that narrative is changing. We deeply appreciate the honourable minister and Mr. President for recognising our people not just as occupants, but as rightful owners.”

David also appealed to the minister to extend the gesture to stakeholders across the 62 wards of the FCT who have contributed to the peace, unity and development of the capital city since its creation.

“I also want to plead with the FCT minister to extend the gesture of issuance of Certificates of Occupancy to traditional rulers to some stakeholders in the 62 wards, which are 100 stakeholders in each ward so that they can feel appreciated and recognised.

The minister should give 6,200 stakeholders Certificates of Occupancy as appreciation for their contributions to the peace, unity and development of the FCT,” he added.
