The Northern States Governors’ Forum and Conference of State Legislatures on Tuesday expressed profound grief over the death of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Zuru.

Zuru passed away in the early hours of Tuesday in Egypt.

In a condolence message, Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, described the late Speaker’s death as a painful and monumental loss, not only to Kebbi State but also to the entire northern region and Nigeria’s democratic and legislative community.

In a statement issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor said, “The passing of Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Zuru is a painful and monumental loss, not only to Kebbi State but to the entire northern region and Nigeria’s democratic and legislative community.”

The Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, Hon Dennis Guwor, has said the passing of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly (KSHA), Muhammad  Zuru, came to him as a rude shock, especially at this critical point in the nation’s development.

Guwor, who is the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly (DSHA), while expressing deep sadness over the news of the loss of Zuru, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, described the sad incident as heartbreaking and painful.

Guwor stressed that the demise of Zuru was a great loss not only to the Government and people of Kebbi State but to the entire legislative community in Nigeria.

Gov Idris mourns Kebbi Assembly Speaker, Usman‑Zuru

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has expressed sorrow at the death of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Usman‑Zuru.

The governor’s condolence message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Yahaya Sarki, on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi.

Idris described Usman‑Zuru’s death as a tragic and monumental loss to Kebbi State and to the nation. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Speaker died on Monday in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by Alhaji Suleiman Shamaki, Clerk of the House.

According to the statement, the governor is devastated by the loss of a trusted ally, a committed lawmaker, and an outstanding leader whose devotion to duty, humility, and wisdom distinguished him.

“He was a pillar of legislative stability and democratic governance, as well as a dependable partner in our collective efforts to advance the development of Kebbi State,” the statement quoted the governor as saying. It added that the late Speaker’s death has created a leadership vacuum in the state.

Idris said Usman Zuru’s calm disposition, maturity in handling state affairs, and commitment to unity would be greatly missed. “Usman‑Zuru was a man of honour, integrity and loyalty, who served the state with distinction and left behind a legacy of selfless service. Kebbi has lost one of its finest sons at a time when his experience and counsel were most needed. The loss is not only personal to the government and people of Kebbi, but also a painful blow to the State House of Assembly, the political class and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him,” he said.
