The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, has intensified efforts to court former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, into the ruling party ahead of future elections.
Yilwatda led a delegation, including Hayatu Gwarzo, on a visit to Shekarau’s residence in Mundubawa, Kano, where he described the move as both a show of respect and a strategic political engagement.
Speaking during the meeting, the APC chairman commended Shekarau’s political pedigree, describing him as a sincere man and a decent politician whose experience remains relevant to national development.
He said the North must remain united at a critical period in Nigeria’s political journey, stressing the need for collaboration among key stakeholders.
Yilwatda also referenced the region’s support for the completion of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, noting that the same principle of fairness should allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to complete his term.
“I am a northerner, and I will not allow anything that will sabotage the North,” he said.
He further cited ongoing federal projects, including the Lagos–Kano–Maradi rail line and gas pipeline initiatives, as indicators of the administration’s commitment to the region’s development.
Making a direct appeal, Yilwatda urged Shekarau to join the APC, saying his leadership would strengthen the party.
“We need your experience and leadership to move the party and the nation forward,” he added.
In his response, Shekarau thanked the delegation for the visit, describing it as brotherly, but noted that his current party, the Peoples Democratic Party, is grappling with internal challenges.
He said consultations were ongoing with stakeholders, including his Shura Council, to determine his next political move.
“In the next couple of days, I will make my position known after thorough consultation,” he said.
