Since assuming office on 4th December, 2024, Comrade Grace Ike has emerged as a dynamic and compassionate leader, steering the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council into a new era marked by purposeful reforms, human-centered policies and professional excellence.

Her tenure, though still unfolding, is already being celebrated as one of the most impactful in the Council’s history.

Elected on the strength of a clear and ambitious manifesto, Grace Ike wasted no time in translating promises into action. With a strong focus on members’ welfare, capacity building and infrastructural development, she “hit the ground running” — a phrase that has since become synonymous with her leadership style.

One of her most remarkable achievements lies in professional development. Under her stewardship, over 500 journalists have benefitted from targeted training programmes designed to sharpen their skills and reinforce the principles of balanced, fair and responsible journalism. These initiatives have not only enhanced individual competencies but also raised the overall standard of journalism practice within the FCT.

Equally noteworthy is her unwavering commitment to the welfare of journalists — a constituency often confronted with demanding working conditions. Recognising the importance of health and well-being, her administration introduced free medical outreach programmes, providing comprehensive health checks, medications and over 100 pairs of reading glasses to members. In a groundbreaking move, she secured free health insurance for journalists—a historic first for the NUJ FCT Council —underscoring her forward-thinking and empathetic leadership.

Her humanitarian approach extends beyond healthcare. During festive periods, particularly Christmas celebrations in 2024 and 2025, bags of rice were distributed to members, offering practical relief and fostering a sense of solidarity within the union. These gestures, though simple, have had profound impacts on morale and unity.

Understanding that knowledge is the bedrock of a thriving profession, Grace Ike also introduced a scholarship scheme within her first year in office. This initiative has enabled journalists to pursue advanced training at the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), marking yet another first for the Council. With a batch of beneficiaries currently in session, the programme promises long-term dividends for journalism in Nigeria.

Perhaps one of her most enduring legacies will be her deliberate efforts to strengthen unity and tolerance among members. Through carefully curated social engagements, she has fostered inclusivity across religious and ethnic lines. For the first time in the Council’s history, journalists gathered for a collective Iftar during Ramadan, while similar inclusive celebrations were organised for Sallah, Christmas and Easter. These events have significantly deepened camaraderie and mutual respect within the NUJ community.

On the infrastructure front, her administration has embarked on transformative projects to improve the working environment.

The NUJ FCT Secretariat has undergone substantial upgrades, creating a more conducive space for professional activities. Additionally, work is underway on a modern two-storey Congress Hall — a bold and visionary project that reflects her commitment to institutional growth and sustainability.

Looking ahead, Grace Ike’s vision extends even further. Plans are underway to establish a Journalists’ Village — a pioneering initiative to provide affordable housing for members. This ambitious project, if realised, will not only improve journalists’ welfare but also reinforce ethical and professional standards by offering stability and security.

Administratively, her reforms have also touched staff welfare, with improvements in remuneration reflecting a holistic approach to leadership that values every stakeholder within the Council.

In less than two years, Comrade Grace Ike has demonstrated that leadership anchored on empathy, vision and action can yield extraordinary results. Her tenure stands as a testament to what is possible when commitment meets compassion — a legacy that continues to inspire and set new benchmarks within the NUJ and beyond.
