To enhance commercial activities among fish farmers, the Nasarawa State government has commenced the harvest of over 100, 000 fingerings earlier stocked in Doma Dam in Doma local government area.

The harvest, which was supervised by the director-general of the State Human Capital Development Agency, Habiba Balarabe Suleiman, attracted stakeholders from the sub-sector.

The state government, through the agency, in 2025 stocked fingerlings as part of the mass production move aimed at enhancing activities and improving the livelihoods of host communities.

The development followed complaints by farmers in the Doma council about fish shortages.

Speaking at the event, the director general expressed delight with the harvest while promising to replicate the gestures in other LGAs in the state in a programme designed in phases.

She noted that commercial fishing can now resume, enabling communities to rebuild their sources of income.

She said the intervention is a pilot scheme, and lessons learned will guide expansion to other water bodies across the state.

The director general further explained that it is being implemented in two phases: the stocking of the main water body and capacity building for communities in modern fish farming techniques. The government has also established fish ponds within communities, where over 3000 fish have been stocked.

In his address, the Chairman of the Nasarawa State Fishery Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, Bashir Muhammad, commended the state government for the initiative and cautioned fishermen against engaging in harmful fishing practices.
