In a bid to enhance commercial activities among fish farmers in the state, the Nasarawa State Government has commenced the harvest of over 100, 000 fingerings earlier stocked in the Doma Dam in Doma Local Government Area of the state.
The harvest exercise which was supervised by the director – general of State Human Capital Development Agency, Habiba Balarabe Suleiman attracted stakeholders from the sub sector.
The state government through the agency in 2025,stocked the fingerings in the mass production move aimed at enhancing the activities and improving the livelihoods of host communities.
The development followed compliant of fish shortages by farmers in Doma local government.
Speaking at the event, the director general expressed delight with the harvest while promising to replicate the gestures in other LGAs in the state in a programmer designed in phases.
She noted that fishing activities can now resume on a commercial scale, enabling communities to rebuild their sources of income.
She said the intervention is a pilot scheme, and lessons learned will guide expansion to other water bodies across the state.
The director general further explained that the project is being implemented in two phases: the stocking of the main water body, and capacity building for communities in modern fish farming techniques while the government has also established fish ponds within communities, where over 3000 fish have been stocked.
In his address, the chairman of the Nasarawa State Fishery Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, Bashir Muhammad, commended the state government for the initiative and cautioned fishermen against engaging in harmful fishing practices.
