Immigration Launches Probe, Suspends Top Officers Over Seme Border Extortion

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched an investigation into allegations of widespread extortion by its personnel along the Lagos–Seme border corridor.

The comptroller-general, Kemi Nandap, has ordered the immediate suspension of the comptrollers overseeing the affected commands to ensure a transparent probe.

In a statement signed by the service public relations officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS boss condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as unacceptable and a violation of its core values and professional standards.

According to the statement, a comprehensive investigation is underway to identify all officers involved, with a commitment that anyone found culpable would face prompt disciplinary action.

The NIS reaffirmed its dedication to professionalism, transparency and accountability across all entry and exit points, stressing that it would not tolerate misconduct that undermines public trust.

It also encouraged members of the public to report unethical behaviour through its official communication channels, including verified social media platforms and 24-hour contact lines.

The service added that internal monitoring mechanisms are being strengthened to improve service delivery and uphold integrity in its operations.

It maintained that no act undermining public trust or tarnishing the integrity of the institution would be condoned.

To support this mandate, the NIS encouraged citizens to report misconduct through its 24-hour contact centre numbers and official social media handles, as internal mechanisms are being strengthened to uphold accountability.
