They raised the alarm at a media and stakeholders’ roundtable dialogue session held in Enugu. The event was organised under GHARF-led EU-ACT Consortium aimed at combating human trafficking and irregular migration of youth and women in Enugu State.

The dialogue which was designed to facilitate conversation among stakeholders to sensitise them about the activities of the project as well as get their commitment for achieving the project goal.

A focal person and the founder of Global Health Awareness Forum (GHARF), Prof Obioma Nworgu posited that if people are provided with skills, it would reduce the incidences of irregular migration among youths and women.

To check the incidences of irregular migration in Enugu State, Nworgu said they selected 150 people, 25 each from six rural communities from the three senatorial zones of the state.

She said the participants would be trained in different skills such as poultry, piggery, cosmetology, barbing, computer repairs, among others.

The chairman of Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, commended the organisers of the roundtable as well as efforts being made to get the youths and women gainfully employed to dissuade them from indulging in irregular migration out of the state and country.

“Irregular migration has become a big problem for the world and particularly our own continent.  That makes today’s meeting a timely one.  We are here to brainstorm to proffer solutions to the incidences.

“I hope that the recommendation will help in ameliorating irregular migration of our women and youths,” the traditional ruler said.

The media and the stakeholders opined that if government should reduce the incidences of insecurity, provide jobs and remunerate the workforce adequately, the incidences of irregular migration would be greatly reduced.
