Global Leaders Urged To Prioritise Climate, Health, Education At Spring Meetings

As the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund begin in Washington, DC, Policy House International has called on global leaders to prioritise critical development issues, warning that shifting geopolitical tensions could divert attention from pressing global challenges.

In a statement signed by its Country Director, Taiwo Akerele, the organisation expressed concern that emerging global crises, particularly ongoing tensions in the Middle East, may overshadow key development priorities affecting vulnerable populations.

While acknowledging the importance of global peace and security, the group stressed that long-standing structural challenges especially those impacting the Global South must not be relegated to the background.

Policy House International identified the climate crisis and its impact on food security, the persistent underfunding of girl-child education in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the deepening primary healthcare challenges particularly for women and persons living with disabilities—as urgent issues requiring sustained global attention.

According to the organisation, these interconnected challenges are central to inclusive development, human security, and long-term global stability, yet continue to suffer from inadequate financing and fragmented policy responses.

The group urged global leaders, policymakers, development institutions, and private sector stakeholders to remain committed to addressing these fundamental concerns, even as they navigate immediate geopolitical pressures.

“Emerging crises must not distract from long-term development imperatives. There is a need for deliberate agenda-setting and sustained commitment to issues that directly affect the lives of millions,” the statement read.

Policy House International also called for increased efforts towards mobilising adequate financing, strengthening resilience systems, and implementing policies that deliver measurable improvements for underserved populations.

It added that the credibility of global leadership would ultimately be judged not only by responses to immediate crises, but also by the resolve to confront persistent and deeply rooted development challenges.

As deliberations continue, the organisation urged stakeholders to maintain a balanced focus that ensures both short-term stability and long-term development goals are effectively addressed.
