The legendary “Abami Eda,” Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has officially made history as the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The landmark announcement was made on Monday, April 13, 2026, during a live broadcast in the United States, sparking celebrations across Nigeria and the global music community.

Fela was inducted under the “Early Influence” category, a prestigious honor reserved for artists whose music and style have fundamentally reshaped the landscape of global sound. This recognition comes just months after Fela was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year, cementing 2026 as the ultimate year of global validation for his legacy.

The Class of 2026 is particularly significant for Nigeria, as it also includes the legendary soul icon Sade Adu. They are joined by other global heavyweights such as Oasis, Phil Collins, Wu-Tang Clan, and Queen Latifah.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recognized Fela not just for his revolutionary blend of jazz, funk, and traditional African rhythms, but also for his uncompromising stance as a social activist. By using his music as a weapon against injustice, Fela created a blueprint for political resistance that continues to inspire modern Afrobeats stars and activists worldwide.

Fans will not have to wait long to see the legend celebrated on the big stage. The formal induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
