A former lecturer with the Mechanical Engineering Department, Bayero University, Kano, Dr Muttaqha Rabe-Darma, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Katsina Central Senatorial seat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ex-don, who is contesting under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledged to use his extensive experience to deliver effective representation.

Rabe-Darma made the declaration during a press conference convened in Katsina to address growing public interest and calls from supporters urging him to join the race.

He disclosed that the decision followed wide consultations with political associates, mentors, and constituents across the senatorial zone.

The aspirant said the move was also influenced by a visit by a large group of supporters who went to his residence, demanding clarity on his political ambition.

“I was compelled to respond to the calls of the people who believe I can represent them effectively,” he said.

He clarified that his bid is focused on representing his senatorial zone, stressing that he does not claim superiority over other contenders but is confident in his capacity to deliver.

Rabe-Darma described participation in elections as a fundamental aspect of democratic engagement, regardless of the outcome.

The ex-don highlighted his diverse professional background, spanning academia, public service, and the private sector.

He noted that he began his career as a university lecturer in mechanical engineering and operational research, before moving into key roles in government agencies and private firms.

The aspirant listed his previous positions to include managerial roles at the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), SCORE Motors, and an oil company based in Port Harcourt, and provided consultancy services on water supply projects.

In the public sector, he served as Director of Research, Executive Director of the Katsina State Environmental Protection Agency, and Commissioner in several ministries.

The aspirant also pointed to his tenure at the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), where he contributed to stabilising and improving the agency’s performance.

On his political journey, Rabe-Darma said he had been actively involved in politics since his student days, contesting various positions.

He outlined his priorities to include security, improving education, enhancing economic opportunities, and raising living standards across the state.

“My focus is on empowering the people and creating opportunities that will uplift communities,” he said. (NAN)
