Nigeria’s tertiary education reform drive has once again come under the spotlight as the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc Sonny Echono, emerges 2025 Personality of the Year and Tertiary Education Transformation Champion.
The honour, awarded by Aljazirah Nigeria and London during a ceremony held at his office in Abuja recently, recognises his reform-driven leadership and transparent stewardship of one of Nigeria’s most critical education intervention agencies.
For an institution often at the centre of national debates on funding, infrastructure gaps, and research development, the recognition of its chief executive is more than ceremonial.
It also shows an emerging narrative of institutional reform, accountability, and a renewed focus on results.
Presenting the award, the Chief Executive Officer of Aljazirah Nigeria and London, Dr Etuka Bassey, said the decision followed several weeks of nationwide assessment conducted by the organisation’s award committee.
According to him, the evaluation process was deliberately extensive, designed to move beyond surface-level achievements and examine real impact across Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.
Bassey described Echono’s leadership as one defined by remarkable achievements driven by an ambitious era of reform, noting that under his watch, projects funded by TETFund have been executed with what he termed commendable speed, accountability, and value for money.
“Our independent assessment team visited over 20 federal universities across Nigeria last year, and the impact speaks volumes beyond administrative rhetoric.
“What we saw was a transformation that is visible on the ground. You have elevated the Fund into a strategic engine of research and intellectual achievement,” he said.
He pointed to several flagship interventions, including the National Research Fund, the expansion of academic research platforms, and the strengthening of the Nigerian Research and Education Network.
These, he said, were not isolated initiatives but part of a broader strategy to reposition Nigerian universities within the global knowledge economy.
According to him, the goal is to ensure that Nigerian tertiary institutions are not only consumers of global knowledge but active contributors to it.
Bassey also revealed that Aljazirah undertook an extensive and covert investigation into Echono’s professional conduct, both within and outside Nigeria, as part of its due diligence process.
He said the investigation extended into financial systems and global records in search of any evidence of misconduct or illicit enrichment.
“We delved into the darkest corners of global finance, hunting for illicit properties and offshore shell accounts. After several months of research, I make bold to say that the Executive Secretary of TETFund is remarkably untainted and not corrupt.”
He added that even undercover operations, during which investigators posed as contractors and engaged with staff, produced no evidence of malpractice or unethical behaviour.
“Our findings revealed no corrupt practices of any kind involving the Executive Secretary,” he stated.
Bassey disclosed that the full findings of the investigation have been compiled into a 72-page report, which is expected to be submitted to the President and relevant anti-corruption agencies in August 2026.
He praised Echono’s leadership style as a reassuring example of how purposeful governance can transform public institutions.
“Your work stands as a reassuring reminder that purposeful leadership can transform systems and secure the future. Nigerians and the international community are proud.”
As part of the recognition, Aljazirah Nigeria and London also produced a 3,000-page commemorative magazine dedicated to Echono, documenting what the organisation described as his legacy in transforming Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
In his response, Echono expressed appreciation for the recognition, describing it as an independent validation of the work being done under TETFund.
“I am greatly humbled. This is based on an honest assessment of the performance of public officers, with nothing attached. It is very cheering news for us.”
He dedicated the award to President Bola Tinubu, commending what he described as the administration’s strong support for education and intervention agencies like TETFund.
According to him, the earliest approvals and largest funding disbursements in the agency’s recent history have been recorded under the current administration.
He said the President has supported the Fund immensely, citing interventions aimed at addressing energy challenges in tertiary institutions as a key example.
He also revealed that additional funding had been approved to help tertiary institutions move towards energy self-sufficiency, a development he said would significantly improve learning conditions and operational efficiency on campuses.
“He said, ‘go ahead, I will also mobilise additional money,’ and he kept his word,” Echono recounted.
The TETFund boss also highlighted improvements in project implementation timelines, noting that early disbursement of 2026 intervention funds was made possible because approvals were secured in 2025.
This, he said, has enabled institutions to begin projects earlier than usual and improve delivery outcomes.
Across the country, he added, universities are already witnessing visible changes in infrastructure, research capacity, and academic quality.
“Our campuses are improving. Our lecturers are being recognised globally, and Nigerian youths are being equipped with the skills for tomorrow’s workforce,” he said.
Echono reiterated his commitment to deepen reforms and strengthen accountability within the Fund.
“We will rededicate ourselves to the service of our country and deliver even more impactful projects and initiatives,” he assured.
Over the past four years, Echono’s tenure at TETFund has been marked by sweeping reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and impact across Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions.
From infrastructure upgrades to research funding and institutional partnerships, the agency has expanded its footprint significantly.
Apart from the latest recognition, Echono has received several national and international honours acknowledging his contributions to education reform and public service delivery.
Among them is the African Leadership Excellence Award in Educational Development, presented in London by the African Leadership Organisation. The award was conferred by the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, HE Philip Davis, and celebrated his leadership in advancing educational excellence and innovation.
He was also named Champion Newspapers’ Outstanding Public Servant of the Year, in recognition of his efforts to reposition TETFund as a high-impact institution driving the strategic development of Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
