Amb. Dunoma Ahmed Permanent-Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,, has affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in Sudan, as well as strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
Ahmed disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, by the spokesperson of the ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
The statement which was released against the backdrop of the visit by Amb. Mohamed Abdelaal, Ambassador of Sudan to Nigeria to the ministry, underscored the importance of ending hostilities through dialogue and negotiation.
The two officials reiterated the crisis in Sudan has broader implications for peace and security across Africa, particularly within the Sahel region.
They suggested avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation, including the proposed convening of the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to tackle issues of mutual interest.
They further discussed planned high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria, stressing the need to protect Nigerian assets in Sudan and provide support for affected nationals.
Ahmed identified Nigeria’s active role within the African Union and the international community in advocating peaceful resolution of the crisis, saying sustainable peace can only be achieved through inclusive political processes and constructive engagement.
Ahmed said, “Nigeria and Sudan share longstanding historical and cultural ties rooted in centuries of interaction, migration, and mutual cooperation.
“Both countries remain closely connected with shared interests in regional peace and development.”
For his part, Abdelaal highlighted the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations and the strong integration of persons of Nigerian origin within Sudanese society.
The envoy explained recent developments in Sudan to include ongoing recovery efforts in some parts affected by conflict, while acknowledging progress made in restoring stability in certain areas.
He expressed concern over continued external interference and its implications for prolonged conflict, and regional security.
