US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire beginning Thursday, although it remains unclear whether Iran-backed Hezbollah is part of the arrangement.
Trump said the truce followed what he described as “excellent” discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, coming two days after both countries held peace talks in Washington.
“These two Leaders have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a 10 Day CEASEFIRE at 5 P.M. EST,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
He added that he had instructed US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and senior US military officer Dan Caine to engage with both sides “to achieve a Lasting PEACE.”
“It has been my Honour to solve 9 Wars across the World, and this will be my 10th, so let’s, GET IT DONE!” said Trump, who launched the war on Iran alongside Israel on February 28.
Hezbollah’s involvement in the ceasefire deal was not confirmed. The group had previously drawn Lebanon into the broader Middle East conflict by launching rockets at Israel in support of Iran.
Since the escalation began, Israeli strikes on Lebanon have reportedly killed more than 2,000 people and displaced over one million residents, while Israeli ground troops have also advanced into southern parts of the country.
Trump also said late Wednesday that Aoun and Netanyahu were expected to speak on Thursday, though there has been no confirmation that the call has taken place.
