Basic Education Commission Distributes 140,000 Learning Materials To FCT Schools

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has distributed about 140,000 instructional materials to public basic schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The exercise was flagged off yesterday at Model Junior Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja.

At the event, the executive secretary of UBEC, Dr Aisha Garba, said the intervention formed part of broader nationwide efforts by UBEC to improve basic education delivery through the provision of infrastructure, teacher development, structured pedagogy, teaching aids and digital learning tools.

According to her, UBEC, in collaboration with states, distributed 100,000 instructional materials and school records to Integrated Qur’anic and Tsangaya Education centres nationwide as part of efforts to address the challenge of out-of-school children.

Garba added that beyond textbooks, the commission has supplied smart boards, tablets, desktop computers and over 400,000 library materials to schools across the country, while 15 million learning support kits have also been distributed to enhance learning among pupils.

She said the 140,000 items deployed to the FCT, comprising core subject textbooks, teacher resource packs and digital learning aids, are expected to benefit 10,000 pupils.

“The FCT SUBEB has received allocations that include core subject textbooks, teacher resource packs, and digital learning aids designed to strengthen teaching and learning outcomes.

“These items, which are around 140,000 in number, are expected to impact no fewer than 10,000 pupils in the FCT. This is indeed a milestone worth celebrating.

“Our efforts have made a great impact on the challenges that schools face in delivering quality education, particularly in terms of infrastructure, teacher capacity and access to learning resources,” she added.

The UBEC boss also commended the leadership of FCT-UBEB for the initiative and urged that the materials be promptly delivered to end users, and called on the administration to sustain such interventions by timely releasing counterpart funding for basic education projects.

Representing the FCT minister, Barr Nyesom Wike, the mandate secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, said the FCT Administration is prioritising the education sector.

Hayyo added that the Administration is committed to the timely payment of matching grants to support education development.

In her remarks, the acting executive chairman of FCT-UBEB, Mrs Florence Wenegieme, said the ceremony was a significant milestone in the quest to enhance education in the nation’s capital.

She expressed appreciation to UBEC for its continued support, noting that the distribution showed the importance of education as the bedrock of national development.
