Senegalese American singer Akon has stirred the pot regarding modern relationship dynamics, claiming that men are not naturally wired to be committed to a single romantic partner. Speaking in a recent interview with The Shade Room, the “Lonely” singer argued that male biology is designed for “breeding” and population rather than monogamy.
The 52-year-old artist, born Aliaune Badara Thiam, offered a controversial distinction between “commitment” and “faithfulness.” According to Akon, while men are “guilty” of being unable to commit to one woman, they can remain faithful to a primary partner. He suggested that a man could be involved with other women who “mean nothing” to him while still emotionally fighting for his “main” partner, an energy he defines as true faithfulness.
“We’re natural breeders by nature,” Akon stated. “We populate because that’s how God created us. So we can’t be committed to one, two, three. That’s not ours; we’re not wired to be committed.” He further claimed that the prevalence of infidelity in society is proof of this “natural” inclination, suggesting it is no coincidence that most marital disputes centre on the presence of another woman.
These remarks come at a sensitive time for the singer’s personal life. In September 2025, Akon’s wife of 28 years, Tomeka Thiam, filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair share one daughter, 17-year-old Journey Thiam. Despite the high-profile split, Akon has remained a staunch advocate for polygamy, previously confirming he is the father of nine children and has been linked to several other wives, including Rozina Negusei and Amirror.
Akon’s perspective has ignited a fierce debate online, with many critics questioning whether his “nature” argument is simply a justification for infidelity. In contrast, others defend his right to his cultural and personal beliefs regarding multiple partners.
