Nigerian Football Loses A Titan As Ibrahim Galadima Dies At 74

Nigerian football is mourning the loss of one of its most influential figures, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, the esteemed former chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), now known as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Alhaji Galadima, a towering personality in the sport, passed away on Saturday, 18th April 2026, in Kano, at the age of 74.

The news of his demise was confirmed by Alhaji Sani Ahmed Toro, a former NFA General Secretary, who served alongside Galadima during a pivotal era for Nigerian football.

Toro, in a poignant announcement, stated, “I regret to announce the death of our respected Alh Ibrahim Galadima, former NFA Chairman, today in Kano. May Allah reward him with Aljanna Firdausi.” This heartfelt tribute underscores the deep respect and admiration Galadima commanded within Nigeria’s football fraternity.

Born on 14th June 1951, in Fagge, Kano, Alhaji Galadima’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to sports development, particularly football. His illustrious career began with his chairmanship of the Kano State Football Association between 1977 and 1979.

He further solidified his commitment to sports administration as the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Sports Council from 1981 to 1983. His expertise was soon recognised on a national level, leading to his appointment as a member of the Caretaker Committee of the National Sports Commission the following year.

Galadima’s influence extended beyond football, as evidenced by his election as the 1st Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) in 1985, a role he held until 1987. He subsequently returned to lead the Kano State Sports Council, demonstrating his enduring commitment to his home state.

His public service career also saw him appointed Commissioner for Social Welfare, Youth and Sports in 1989, and later as Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, showcasing his versatile leadership skills.

A staunch advocate for infrastructure development in sports, Alhaji Galadima was a member of the Presidential Monitoring Committee on stadia development for the Nigeria 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship, a tournament ultimately relocated to Qatar due to the meningitis outbreak in some part of Nigeria.

Alhaji Galadima international standing was further affirmed by his service as a Member of CAF’s Youth Competitions Committee. In 1999, he played a crucial role as the Chairman of the Kano Sub-seat for the Nigeria 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship, a successful event that showcased Nigeria’s organisational capabilities.

His pinnacle achievement in football administration came in 2002 when he was elected Chairman of the then Nigeria Football Association. He steered the organisation with distinction until 2006, leaving behind an unblemished record, free from controversy or reputational stain.

Beyond his national roles, he also returned to Kano to serve as chairman of Kano Pillars Football Club, and later as the head of the Kano State Sports Commission, cementing his legacy as a true giant of Nigerian sports.

Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima’s passing leaves a void in Nigerian football that will be deeply felt, but his immense contributions will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
