The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Lagos State Chapter has firmly rejected a purported announcement by a group claiming to have removed its Chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, from office.
In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP, the embattled Chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, described the action as unlawful and a blatant violation of the NMA’s constitution, which lays out clear guidelines for electing, serving, and removing officers.
Saheed emphasised that the individuals behind the announcement failed to follow any due process required by the association’s constitution. He declared the purported removal an exercise in futility, lacking legal foundation, constitutional validity, or institutional recognition. “It is therefore null, void, and incapable of producing any lawful consequence within the framework of the Association,” the statement read.
The chairman, who was duly elected by the general membership, insisted that he remain the legitimate officeholder.
He warned that any attempts to undermine his mandate through irregular means are null and void and have no effect on the association’s operations.
Addressing members, stakeholders, and the public, Saheed reaffirmed the leadership’s commitment to the rule of law, transparency, and democratic principles enshrined in the NMA constitution. The statement outlined key points to clarify the situation.
“The so-called removal constitutes a clear violation of the NMA Constitution and is therefore not recognised. Having failed to comply with due process, it is null and void and of no effect, remaining nothing more than a figment of their imagination, lacking any constitutional or legal basis.
“The chairman remains in office and continues to discharge his duties fully. All members are advised to disregard any communication or directive emanating from unauthorised persons or groups. Appropriate steps, including legal action where necessary, are being taken to address this breach and to preserve the integrity of the association,’’ the statement reads in part.
The association urged all members to remain calm, remain law-abiding, and focus on its core objectives, such as promoting professional excellence and protecting public health.
