Afthonia, in collaboration with the Lagos State Office of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), is set to stage a thought-provoking theatrical production titled Weaving Sustainability, aimed at addressing Nigeria’s growing textile waste crisis and promoting circular practices within the fashion industry.

The organisers said the initiative is designed to move beyond conventional panel discussions by using theatre as a creative tool to spotlight critical challenges such as overproduction, poor waste management, and unsustainable consumption patterns that continue to plague the sector.

According to Afthonia, while sustainability has become a recurring topic within industry circles, there remains a gap between awareness and practical understanding.

The stage play seeks to bridge this gap by translating complex sustainability concepts into a simple, engaging narrative that resonates with a wider audience.

“We want to go beyond just conversations. This production is about helping people understand what sustainability means in practice, especially within the textile and fashion ecosystem,” the organisers said.

Through its storyline, Weaving Sustainability explores themes such as circularity, regenerative textile systems, ethical production, and responsible sourcing. It highlights how adopting circular models—where materials are reused, recycled, and repurposed—can significantly reduce waste and environmental impact.

The production forms part of a broader advocacy effort by Afthonia and its partners to inspire more responsible approaches to fashion and textile production in Nigeria. By presenting these ideas through theatre, the organisers hope to spark reflection, influence consumer behaviour, and encourage industry players to embrace more sustainable practices.

They added that the play underscores the urgent need to shift how textiles are produced and consumed, stressing that achieving sustainability in the sector requires collective action from designers, manufacturers, policymakers, and consumers alike.
