Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday, expressed excitement about the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 10th Senate, adding that its members have every reason to celebrate their growing number.

Akpabio stated that APC Senators currently stand at about 87 of the total 109 seats in the Red Chamber though it lost three members to death.

“APC, you have a right to jubilate. I don’t know how many now, but I think we are now about 87 out of 109 Senators. Unfortunately, we lost three and elections have not been held, so actually out of 106, we are now about 87, remaining just a few people to join us,” he said.

He further hinted at ongoing efforts to expand the party’s dominance, revealing that some opposition lawmakers were in talks with him on plans to join APC.

“The 20-something or so remaining are still negotiating with me, and when the negotiation is completed, I will let you know, so we can move as one. Congratulations to all of you, and welcome to the APC family,” Akpabio added.

The Senate President’s remarks followed fresh defections to the APC in the Red Chamber. The Minority Whip, Osita Ngwu, who represents Enugu West, officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling party.

Similarly, Anthony Siyako Yaro, representing Gombe South, also defected from the PDP to the APC, further boosting the ruling party’s numberical strength in the Senate.
