Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday hinted that the Red Line rail corridor may be extended beyond Lagos into neighbouring Ogun State, in a move aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and easing commuter movement across the Lagos-Ogun axis.
The governor, who disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists at Lagos House Marina, added that the Red Line rail system, designed to transport up to 500,000 passengers daily, currently runs from Agbado through Ikeja to Oyingbo, serving key Lagos Mainland communities and reducing pressure on road networks.
Sanwo-Olu said discussions were ongoing with his Ogun State counterpart, Dapo Abiodun, on the proposed extension, noting that it forms part of broader efforts to expand transport infrastructure and deepen regional integration, subject to regulatory approval and inter-state collaboration.
“There are conversations to see if we can even further extend it into Ogun State so that more people can benefit from the services,” he said.
He explained that the Red Line project is a key component of the state’s multimodal transport strategy, which integrates rail, road, and water transport systems to improve mobility across Lagos and its environs.
According to him, the state is advancing its waterways transportation programme, expressing optimism that high-capacity electric boats would be introduced next year to enhance operations and provide additional commuting options along major water routes.
He said the combined investments are designed to transform urban mobility by reducing congestion, improving connectivity, and ensuring seamless movement of residents across Lagos and neighbouring areas.
