A group under the aegis of the Nasarawa State Transparency, Accountability and Good Governance Group (NS-TA&G2), has demanded the strengthening of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election through direct primaries.
It said since the stakeholders had earlier resolved to adopt the direct mode of primaries, especially for the governorship election, it was important that the party honours the resolution.
In a statement issued by its leader, Laz’rus Salaki, NS-TA&G2 averred that transparent primaries will give all aspirants level playing ground, and reduces the risk of implosion and explosion in the party.
The group expressed worries over the rising tension in the polity over the announcement of a preferred aspirant by Governor Abdullahi Sule, stressing that such action is inimical to the peace and stability within the party.
He said the move is in defiance of democratic norms and principles, even as it called on the governor take an introspective view of the whole scenario and revert back to all aspirants and stakeholders alike for an amicable resolution.
It said the action is more worrisome “especially that the state chairman of the party, Dr. Aliyu Bello happens to be a very close ally of the ‘preferred aspirant’, and that his actions will be interpreted as already taken sides.
“Based on the aforementioned, we are calling on the Chairman to as a matter of fact and urgency, step aside to allow for justice, fairness, equity and transparency in the selection process.
