Farioli Casts Doubt On Moffi’s Future At Porto

Porto head coach Francesco Farioli has admitted that the club remains undecided over whether to activate the purchase clause for on-loan Nigerian striker Terem Moffi, leaving the forward’s future shrouded in uncertainty as the season draws to a close.

Moffi, 25, arrived at the Estádio do Dragão on a temporary deal from Ligue 1 side OGC Nice back in January, seeking regular playing time and a fresh start after a turbulent first half of the campaign in France.

The loan agreement reportedly includes an €8 million buyout option — a fee that Porto are now weighing carefully as they assess both the player’s form and their own summer transfer priorities.

Speaking to Bola na Rede, Farioli was measured in his response when pressed about Moffi’s long-term status. “No final decision has been taken yet,” the Italian coach said.

“Terem is a talented player, and we are still evaluating his integration with the group and what the squad will need next season. These are conversations that will happen in the coming weeks.”

The uncertainty, however, is compounded by Moffi’s fraught relationship with his parent club, Nice. The Nigeria international has made it abundantly clear that he has no intention of returning to the Allianz Riviera after a harrowing incident in December, when he was confronted and verbally abused by angry supporters on the club’s training ground premises.

That clash followed a demoralising 3–1 home defeat to Lorient — a result that pushed the team’s fanbase to the brink.

The ugly scene left deep psychological scars on the striker, who has since been determined to sever all ties with the French side. In a public statement that effectively shut the door on any potential reconciliation, Nice co-president Maurice Cohen confirmed that the club has no desire to bring Moffi back into the fold.

“The chapter with Terem is closed,” Cohen declared bluntly. “He will not play for Nice again. That is our position, and it is final.”

With neither Nice willing to accept his return nor Porto yet committing to a permanent transfer, Moffi finds himself in a precarious limbo. The €8 million fee is far from exorbitant by modern standards, but Porto’s hierarchy is known for prudent financial management, and they will want to ensure that any investment delivers a reliable return in goals and performances.

For now, Moffi continues to train with the Porto squad and feature intermittently off the bench. His future — whether in Portugal, France, or elsewhere — hinges on a decision that Farioli and the club’s board appear in no rush to make.

One thing, however, seems certain: a return to Nice is no longer an option for the sidelined Super Eagle.
