Ghana Seeks Investors to Revive National Airline

Ghana has opened fresh talks with potential investors as it seeks to revive a national airline more than two decades after the collapse of its former flag carrier
A statement by the transport ministry said it had commenced a “market sounding” process to attract “potential strategic partners” with the technical and financial capacity to establish a commercially viable and globally competitive airline.
The ministry said the proposed carrier, to be based in Accra, would position the Ghanaian capital as a regional and intercontinental hub for both passenger and cargo traffic, leveraging the country’s growing aviation market and geographic advantage within West Africa.
Under the proposed structure, the government is expected to cede majority ownership to the selected partner, a move analysts say reflects lessons from past state-led ventures that struggled under financial strain and weak corporate governance.
According to the ministry, interested investors must demonstrate proven airline operations expertise, strong regulatory compliance records and sufficient financial muscle to support fleet acquisition and route expansion.
The planned airline is expected to run a full-service model, covering long-haul destinations across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia, alongside regional routes within Africa. It will also incorporate an integrated cargo division to tap into rising demand for air freight services.
Although officials did not disclose a specific launch date, the government indicated that the new carrier is expected to begin initial operations no later than the first quarter of 2027, with preparations including aircraft acquisition or deployment to commence in the near term.
Ghana has been without a fully operational national airline since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004, following years of mounting debt, failed restructuring efforts and persistent financial losses.
