Jacqueline Falk, daughter of the late American actor Peter Falk famed for his iconic role as Lieutenant Columbo has died at the age of 60.
The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Jacqueline died by suicide in California earlier this week. She was one of the two daughters adopted by the legendary actor and his first wife, Alyce Mayo, during their 16 year marriage.
The news of her death has brought renewed attention to the family’s history. Peter Falk, who passed away in 2011 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, was a household name for his portrayal of the dishevelled but brilliant detective in the long running television series Columbo.
In the years following the actor’s death, the family made headlines due to a legal dispute involving Jacqueline’s sister, Catherine. The conflict centered on conservatorship arrangements that Catherine claimed prevented her from visiting their father during his final years.
The dispute eventually led to the creation of Peter Falk’s Law.The legislation, which has been adopted in more than a dozen U.S. states, is designed to protect the rights of adult children to receive medical updates and maintain visitation with incapacitated parents, ensuring they are not cut off by legal guardians.
