A suspected drug dealer has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano after attempting a dramatic escape by jumping from the second floor of a building at the Audu Bako Secretariat.

The arrest, which occurred on April 30, was part of the agency’s ongoing “Operation Sharar Mafaka” targeting drug hotspots across the state. According to a statement issued by the NDLEA spokesperson, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the suspect was apprehended following intelligence reports about illicit drug activities within the secretariat premises.

“On sighting NDLEA officers, the suspect climbed to the second floor of a building at the secretariat and jumped from behind the structure in an attempt to evade arrest.” The statement revealed.

Despite the escape attempt, officers quickly apprehended him and recovered a quantity of Cannabis sativa. He was subsequently taken into custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The suspect, identified as a car washer, reportedly confessed to engaging in drug trafficking for about two years.

Commenting on the development, the Commander of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, CN DY Lawal, warned against the use of government facilities as cover for illegal activities. “This is a warning to all those that think government establishments can be used as a hideout for their illicit activities,” he said.

The agency reaffirmed that “Operation Sharar Mafaka” remains active, with intensified efforts underway to dismantle drug networks and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
