Ubi Franklin Addresses Men’s Fears About Court Marriage, Debunks Property Split Myth

Nigerian talent manager Ubi Franklin has weighed in on why many men shy away from court marriages, attributing the hesitation to widespread misconceptions about divorce settlements.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Franklin explained that a common belief among men is that legal marriages automatically result in a 50-50 division of property in the event of a divorce. He clarified that this assumption is incorrect and lacks legal backing.

According to him, financial settlements such as alimony are not exclusive to court marriages. He noted that even in customary unions, courts can grant financial support to either party—male or female—if certain legal conditions are met.

Franklin also addressed concerns around gift recovery after a relationship ends. He pointed out that gifts given during a relationship are generally not recoverable unless they were tied to specific conditions at the time they were given. As a precaution, he advised that individuals could purchase certain items in their own name or clearly state conditions attached to such gifts.

His comments have stirred conversations online, shedding light on legal realities surrounding marriage and divorce while challenging long-held assumptions among many men.
